Review and Renew Your Exercise Plan

Liz GilchristWinter, if we can call it that, is OVER. Ready or not, it is time for spring and the chance to make the changes you may have been putting off the last couple of months. There is no time like the present to follow through with all of those promises you have been making to yourself about putting more time into your exercise and making healthier choices before heading off for vacation in the summer. The weather just keeps getting better, the days are longer and even with the obstacles and barriers that come up in everyday life, there is a lot to hopeful about, especially when it comes to the things you can control.

The first and most empowering thing you can do for yourself is to stop making excuses. Let them go. To be honest and blunt about it, if you want something bad enough, YOU CAN FIND A WAY TO GET IT. It doesn’t mean that it will be easy or that you may not have to ask for help, but it can be done. Think back to a time when you successfully earned something, anything, that you truly wanted. I am sure there was moment when it stopped being about the item at stake and more about your desire to succeed. Your quest for healthy living is no different.

Second, make the most of the time you have. Go back to the basics. Schedule your exercise. Finding it difficult to make it into the fitness center more than the required two times per week? Walk during your lunch break. Even if it is laps around the building, it counts and will make you more refreshed to take on the rest of the day.

Are you running around in the afternoon to and from practice with your kids? Drop them off and walk in a nearby neighborhood. Get out of your comfort zone and ask another parent to join you. Having a partner to hold you accountable can make all the difference.

Don’t think you have any time in the evenings for activities? The sun doesn’t set until after 8pm. Go for a walk after dinner or engage in a game of basketball or pick up soccer with your kids in a nearby park. Is your dog restless? They would really enjoy a walk and quality time with their beloved owner.

For some people, you may have been doing the same workout DVD all winter. Chances are you have the majority memorized. Get some tunes pumping and copy the workout in the yard.

Remember that outdoor exercise counts if it gets your blood pumping. Wash your vehicle, mow the lawn with a push mower, pull some weeds or plant some flowers. Make it fun and get your family involved. Healthy living is contagious.

Finally, make it a priority to take care of you. Everyone can come up with reasons to avoid exercise and making time for personal wellness. It is those who take time for themselves, even if it is only in 10 minute increments, who role model that behavior for others they care about. In addition to spreading the good exercise vibes, you will be doing something positive for your health, both mentally and physically.
