Creating Success

20 08 2014

The WMP staff looks very closely at what makes a program participant successful. There is advice about that all over this blog. We gather information from the facilities as well as individual participants to understand what works for this weight loss program, and why. I was recently skimming through some of our prior research, and came across some information about what factors can predicted clinically significant weight loss (5% or more in this case) for PEIA WMP participants. So, here it is, your list of ultimate guidelines for success:

1. Stick with it for at least 6 months. Nobody is perfect all the time, but those participants that stick it out and keep trying lose more weight over time than those that quit. Get to the gym 2 or more times per week. Act on your Dietician’s advice. Simply hanging in there will affect what happens for you in this program.

2. Get comfortable with your gym. Participants that have positive interactions at the gym have better outcomes. So, do what you need to do to get comfortable with your gym. Learn the names of the front desk staff. Make an effort to get to know your trainer. Chat with the woman next to you in Zumba class. You’re going to spend a lot of time here, so make this place feel like yours.

3. Get support from friends. People that have social support from their friends have better outcomes. Don’t wait for it to just happen, create it for yourself. Reach out to a few accountability buddies on Facebook, and post a status update after each of your workouts. Make a standing date with a friend to walk together once a week. Surround yourself with people who will cheer you on.

You are important. This program is about improving your health. What can you do to set yourself up for success? Post your ideas to share in the comments section!
